I'm glad you found your way to my pictures.
What you see here is a motley collection of pictures I have taken starting 2006 when I (finally!) decided it was time to learn the ins and outs of my little digitial camera sitting in my desk drawer dejectedly. As they say, the appetite develops while eating. Meanwhile, I have left my small, but trusty, digital pocket camera behind me and have graduated to bigger things. To somebody who does not like to read manuals, a 150-page book on how to use a camera is a bit disturbing if not downright frightening. So bear with me as I learn the ropes and—hopefully—make some great shots along the way.

Berne, October 15, 2009, 5:45 - 6:15 PM : I am developing a love-hate relationship with my iPhone. I absolutely hate the quality of pictures it takes, but am totally fascinated by what it does when you move it while shooting. The distortions it produces don't seem to fit a pattern. Sometimes it's the edges that get it, sometimes the center or only the left or right side. I am puzzled, but am enjoying the mystery, especially when I look at the result. I believe the iPhone has the potential of becoming another cult camera like the polaroid.
This is one of my blitz-projects that only happen when I am bored, have time to kill and the iPhone is handy. This late afternoon I was waiting for a friend and did not want to wait in the cold. Rather than going for a nice cup of coffee, I kept walking around Berne's main station in unseasonably cold weather during the rush hour, all the time nonchalantly taking pictures as I was moving along.
I converted the shots to black and white and fiddled with curves and contrast until I had the cold and slightly high-key look I wanted. Then, I applied the same setting to all photos.
To many of you this may just look like a bunch of awful pictures. To me it is a 30-minute slice of life around Berne's main station on October 15, 2009. Totally random, but with some surprising effects.
BTW, the last two shots were taken on the train ride back to Zurich later that evening.

Cannot get over the feeling that I may have duplicated somebody's picture I might have seen somewhere. Looked through all my photo books, but couldn't find anything. Still, I like it.

Don't you just love Photoshop?

A nervous flock of pigeons was circling above me, and I was taking shots of them against the overcast white sky. Not until I got home did I realize that I had also captured one of the street lights in it. Obviously I was paying more attention to the birds than to street furniture.

Some minor cropping along the sides, conversion to b/w and I think it makes a fairly decent picture. Granted, the birds could be a little more evenly distributed in places, but try telling them that!

Capitol
One of the (small) projects I had given myself was to take unusual pictures of the Capitol. As I was contemplating whether the tip of the Capitol surfacing on the grassy knoll was going to make an interesting enough picture, I saw a red truck coming down the street. By the time I had the camera out and ready, I only managed to capture the tail end of the truck. I was lucky it turned out that way.

In the right light and frame, even the bottom end of tulips can be attractive.

This little fellow doesn't have cold feet. He is not hiding one leg in his plumage as the weather might dictate; he actually has only one leg. He is doing very well despite of it.

Riding into Zurich one late afternoon, I got bored and began to fiddle around with my iPhone. The camera option is OK, but... well, you know. Imagine my surprise when I got home and took a closer look at what I had shot. The distortion was amazing and took on a surreal undertone with everything being perfectly normal inside the train. What I had expected was a blur in the window. Obviously the iPhone works differently. It shortened my trip and was fun until we hit warp speed...
But here is my dilemma: I just don't really know how to present these pictures. The above layout (all done in PS) is, well, ho-hum in my opinion. Tried dropping shadows, etc., but it only made it busier. I do like the progression of the shots to the complete blur (which I took going through a tunnel, BTW). Any suggestions are welcome.

How often have you taken a picture because there was something that struck you, but you couldn't put your finger on it? Same thing happened here, and the shot looked absolutely boring after I got home and downloaded it. Fooling around with Photoshop and trying different things finally led into this: a b/w conversion, a filter added, darkening of the shudders and leaving the wheel-barrel and basket in color. Now I can live with it.

Watertight door on the Pride of York

Early morning sunshine hitting a bouquet of hydrangea friends brought me the other day.

I cropped the picture zeroing in on the gargoyle. Converted the picture to B/W and posterized it slightly. Then I converted each element (the gargoyle, gutter, wrought iron support and the building) into B/W once again and gave them a separate color.

Just an ordinary July moon

After two weeks of solid fog and subzero temperatures the diving board featured some lovely ice crystals.
